Noirette series (JBF), #6(a) of 8

Flying through the night, the car tires made a rhythmic thump over the concrete highway into the lights of the toll plaza. Hammer tossed two-bits into the coin bucket, and gunned the engine's eight cylinders. The Jaguar flew forward on to the Whitestone Bridge. The best city on earth, he thought, was gliding by to the west where lights pierced the dark sky, full of good and evil, riches, fame and misfortune.
