Noirette series (JBF), #8 of 8

"Arma virumque cano . I sing of arms and a man, the first of Troy ...." Hammer ran The Aeneid's opening line over in his mind. The massive lake stretched away like the ocean of troubles he had. The water guarded a history in its depths. Sun-warmed, a breeze tussled some blades of beach grass. Life was simpler in grade school, when sand castles were permanent for the afternoon. In some places they have tides.

Noirette series (JBF), #7 of 8

Culver to Seabreeze that sultry spring afternoon was not pretty. Traffic crawled, cars & tempers overheated. Hammer had the windows down on the '39 Hudson. Was it sweat or humidity on his brow? He didn't care. Hot is hot. A thunderstorm raced up from the lake. Lighting licked the horizon like a lusty lover; jabs of wind raked the shore. As he rolled up the window, he saw her southbound Cadillac jump the curb.

Noirette series (JBF), #6(b) of 8

The car top was down and night air blew cool on his skin. The water below was slow and murky. There was no traffic on the Van Wyck. Mike Hammer shifted into high gear. He would be at Idlewild in just minutes and on to the Pan Am tarmac. Already his muscles tensed. He knew how it had to end.

Noirette series (JBF), #6(a) of 8

Flying through the night, the car tires made a rhythmic thump over the concrete highway into the lights of the toll plaza. Hammer tossed two-bits into the coin bucket, and gunned the engine's eight cylinders. The Jaguar flew forward on to the Whitestone Bridge. The best city on earth, he thought, was gliding by to the west where lights pierced the dark sky, full of good and evil, riches, fame and misfortune.

Income Opportunity for Painters

Grumbacher paint is looking to hire acrylic painters to teach two-hour workshops at a major retailer in locations across the United States and Canada. In your region, we have openings in Rochester, Victor, and Henrietta. Artists must be capable of demonstrating a still life, landscape, seascape, and floral. We have developed a flexible curriculum in acrylics for an artist to use or adapt to fit to his or her style. We plan to conduct approximately one to four workshops per store per month and the artist will have flexibility in scheduling. Compensation is $100 per workshop, and teaching materials will be provided to the artist at no cost.

Anyone who is interested should email Ellen Cunningham at ecunningham@chartpak.com with examples of their work in acrylics, along with a resume and contact information. (Chartpak is a manufacturer of fine art supplies. Grumbacher, Koh-I-Noor, Higgins ink, and Clearprint are some of our brands.)

Noirette series (JBF), #5 of 8

Dawn slapped the new day awake. Hammer slipped outside to the patio and beach. The sand under his Italian shoes cried out a soft crunch against the wood. The salt air was tangy. A bruise at his ankle reminded him of the snub-nose there as insurance, and the brunette last night, the one who said it was just a boleo. He cocked his head around the corner. A sprint and he pounced through the car door into her Jaguar.

Noirette series (JBF), #4 of 8

Spring in the Northeast is a second grader with a yo-yo. The weather swung from hot to cool, from cold to warm - just between lunch and happy hour. The rain came, then the sun, then a blustery flurry as ol' man winter pulled himself up again.  But with Easter, mother earth rose to a new dawn. Mike Hammer held his head hard, felt the earth spin on its axis while hurtling around the sun. Night fell, all was dark. Hammered again.

Call for Corbett's Glen Artwork

The Board of Directors of the Allen's Creek Corbett's Glen Preservation Group. Our board is planning a Celebrate the Glen! event in Corbett's Glen on September 12, 2010.

We recognize that art and artists have a special connection with Corbett's Glen, and are planning an art exhibit/contest as part of this event.  We realize that this is also the weekend of the Clothesline Art Festival, but offer this as an alternative for those interested.
